In Short
  • Charles Leclerc warns that new F1 regulations make overtaking more challenging and costly.
  • He emphasizes the importance of consistency over risk-taking in maximizing performance during Qualifying.
  • Leclerc notes that understanding the quirks of the new cars is crucial for success on track.

Charles Leclerc has remained consistent with his claims about the new regulations making overtaking more difficult. His point was further proven following his long-fought battle against Lewis Hamilton for the podium finish at the Chinese GP. Now, Leclerc recalls his previous claims and strengthens them by recalling his recent woes in China.

Under the new regulations, the manual overtaking mode heavily relies on the battery. Drivers gaining extra boost on the straight will lose all speed to the rivals behind them for depleting their battery too soon. As such, the likes of Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, and many other drivers are unable to push their cars flat out without worrying about the risks of losing speed too quickly.

Now, Charles Leclerc feels that excelling under the new regulations really depends on understanding the quirks of the new cars. Leclerc accepted that the cars felt very strange, especially during Qualifying. The Monegasque feels that one of his crucial elements to succeed during Qualifying no longer exists. The 28-year-old recalled how he took massive risks just to gain an advantage on track.

Charles Leclerc insisted that the engine side of things was very confusing, especially because of the new electrical component in the power units. The Monegasque is now unable to take risks to gain an advantage on the track, and they barely paid off. Taking risks now meant that Leclerc was losing more than he could gain in terms of pace on track.

It’s a lot down to understanding these new cars, They are very strange in qualifying, because in the past one of my strengths coming into Q3, I was just taking massive risks to get something out more. And, now when you do that, you start confusing the engine side of things, and you start losing a lot more than what you gain.

Charles Leclerc said, as reported by RacingNews365.

Certainly, Charles Leclerc has to resort to trying out new tricks to gain an advantage on track and maximize performance. Ferrari’s start to the 2026 season has been positive for the most part. Charles Leclerc highlighted that consistency remained the most important factor to improve results, especially during Qualifying. He recalled how he found his rhythm during the Chinese GP Qualifying from the Q1 to Q3 session. The Monegasque was still unable to push as hard as he wanted, ultimately making the sessions less exciting. However, Leclerc was glad that he was able to get closer to rivals at the forefront.

Consistency pays off more. [In China] I felt like I just found my rhythm from Q1 to Q3, which is a bit less exciting for Q3 when you are in the car, because you can’t push like you want. At the end of the day, it paid off because I’m closer to the guys in front. But it was not a crazy lap, unfortunately, but you can’t really achieve that anymore.

Charles Leclerc noted.

The 2026 season has just begun, and there are 20 more races to go before completion. The season is long, and development will continue throughout the year. Ferrari has definitely started the season on a much better note. It will be interesting to witness how Charles Leclerc and other drivers develop their driving style around the new regulations and maximize performance.
