Red Bull has lost the lead in the 2024 constructor’s championship to McLaren. While the woes of the RB20 have often been pointed out for this, another major issue in the form of Sergio Perez has been testing the patience of Red Bull supremo Christian Horner. Consequently, the Brit admitted that Perez’s underwhelming performances could not continue as the team needs to rep up for the 2025 season.
Sergio Perez joined Red Bull at the start of the 2021 campaign. Initially, the Mexican appeared as the solution to the age-old second driver problem at Milton Keynes. However, his recent performances have played a major part in the Austrian giant losing the lead in the constructor’s standings. On the other hand, his teammate Max Verstappen has twice as many points as him and is fighting for the driver’s championship.
This stark difference between the two drivers’ capabilities might hamper the Austrian team going forward. Moreover, as questions started piling up against the 34-year-old’s abilities, Christian Horner also joined in and revealed the urgency of the situation at Milton Keynes.
Horner took a stern stance that Red Bull needs their drivers to perform if they want to stay with the team. However, the paddock could take his wordings as hypocritical as when Perez was underperforming, he was given another chance. After the summer break, he was allowed to stay with the team and has yet to showcase his excellence behind the wheel of the RB20.
Sergio Perez aiming to have a better weekend in Austin
Though the six-time race winner has scored only 13 points in his past four outings, he has remained optimistic that the tide would soon turn in his favor. With Red Bull bringing upgrades at the US GP, Perez seemed optimistic that the team would make a big step towards the car becoming more stable to drive.
The 34-year-old explained his thoughts about the upcoming Austin GP and glanced at Red Bull’s decision to introduce upgrades at a Sprint race weekend.
Despite his positive attitude, fans fear that Perez’s optimism might not result in a fruitful outing on track. In light of this, the Mexican desperately needs to have an impressive next few rounds before the season’s climax in Abu Dhabi. He will be required to re-assert his worth in the paddock, or else he could lose his seat for 2025.
