Formula 1 is a sport driven by constant change and improvement in the right direction. It has continued to bring in major changes in multiple areas that improved the overall quality of the sport. However, the recent proposed rule change to allow points to drivers beyond the top ten was heavily criticized by Ex-F1 team owner Eddie Jordan.

The addition of an 11th team in the 2026 season with General Motors Cadillac meant that over 22 players would race around the circuit. Hence, the sport might provide points to the top 12 finishers rather than just ten. The point system has continued to change over the past years with the extra point for the fastest lap now being cancelled.

Eddie Jordan didn’t hesitate to slam the newly proposed rule change. Jordan highlighted that he was strictly ‘against’ the jiggling around for extra points. The Irishman labeled the rule change as ‘absolute nonsense.’ The 76-year-old further joked that Formula 1 would now want to provide points to just everyone on the grid.

I’m absolutely against this jiggling around with absolute nonsense and points, for Christ’s sake, down to 12th place – they’ll soon give points to everyone on the grid. It’s just a nonsense.

Eddie Jordan labeled runner-ups as ‘first of the losers’

Finishing in the top ten is a massive feat for multiple bottom-order teams on the Formula 1 grid. However, Eddie Jordan believed that finishing anything but first wasn’t as impressive as scoring the race win. Jordan reckoned that the drivers needed to have a compulsion to fight and an urge to score race wins. The 76-year-old deemed that drivers finishing second and below were the ‘first of the losers’ and so on, downplaying the importance of a podium finish.

When you’re competing in life, and competing in every different aspect, there is a compulsion amongst us – and that competitive urge is to win. There’s the winner, and then second is the first of the losers, and then it’s the second of the losers and the third of the losers, that’s how I see it.

Formula 1 previously granted points to just the top six players and people didn’t complain. The provision of points to the top ten players was similarly negated back in the day. However, the drivers and fans have made peace with the decision since then.

As a result, the new rule proposition, although seemingly unimpressive, might just improve racing action on the grid. Time will tell about how the rule is implemented and welcomed by the people of the sport.
