F1 expert claims it would cost McLaren ‘this amount’ to sack Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo

Formula 1’s silly season is truly afoot. McLaren and Daniel Ricciardo are in a rather finicky situation. Ricciardo has a contract until the end of the 2023 season, but of course, his performances have not been amazing. He has been beaten by Lando Norris on almost every metric and is still apparently struggling to adapt to the car.

Earlier this year, Daniel Ricciardo had said that he’ll be staying with McLaren beyond 2022, and their team principal, Andreas Seidl had said the same. However, now, that is in some serious doubt. McLaren had been negotiating with Oscar Piastri to replace Ricciardo, and that recently went public.

Fernando Alonso announced that he’ll be going to Aston Martin to replace Sebastian Vettel, and the Formula 1 world exploded. Then Alpine announced that Piastri will replace him at Alpine, but the Australian confirmed that it would not be the case and that they announced it without his consent. Understandably, this saga has blown the minds of millions of people, and it’s not an end yet.

Surely, Oscar Piastri would not have turned down his assured seat at Alpine without good reason. Even so, people were slightly surprised that he has chosen McLaren over Alpine, and Alpine’s team principal, Otmar Szafnauer had rather the same reaction and said he did not understand the move, as Alpine are currently ahead of McLaren in the championship standings.

McLaren probably have an even bigger headache. Daniel Ricciardo is under contract till the end of the 2023 season, and they want to replace him for 2023. This obviously means that they will have to pay out Ricciardo’s contract, which will definitely cost them a hefty sum.

As reported by GPBlog, Formula 1 expert, Peter Windsor said in a YouTube video that he thinks that McLaren will regret the deal he had made with Ricciardo: “What will take some time now is the deal that Zak [Brown] will make with Daniel.”

He elaborated: “Daniel will be riding for him for the rest of this year, so it will not be a comfortable situation for Zak. He’s bound to regret the contract he drew up in the first place, which means Daniel now has so many options and he himself doesn’t.”

Windsor thinks that it will cost McLaren a sum in the region of 20 million to sack Daniel Ricciardo: “This will be another hit in the region of twenty million. Maybe more, or maybe less. Maybe they can negotiate it down or they can finance a seat for him somewhere else. In any case, that will be the key before everything can fall into place.”

Obviously, before McLaren announce the departure and the subsequent potential arrival, they will need to resolve the situation with Daniel Ricciardo. Alpine and Otmar Szafnauer will definitely not make it easy for Piastri either, and are looking for ‘monetary compensation’ for the time and money they have spent on the young Australian.
