George Russell has started the 2025 season off in great form, amidst Mercedes’ improving pace. The Briton has consistently scored podium finishes in all the races and is now on par with Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings. However, Russell’s imminent success in Formula 1 didn’t come with ease as he had to sacrifice a lot in his early days to reap the benefits of racing. Now, the 27-year-old has opened up on his personal life and shared a heartwarming message towards his girlfriend Carmen Mundt.

George Russell is comparatively a silent and calm person as compared to the other drivers on the Formula 1 grid. Although he has some friends in the sport, he hasn’t really shared many details of his personal life with friends from his school days. However, participating in karting and junior categories meant that he did not have much off-track time to make friends who were not connected to the sport. Russell recalled that he never had many friends because he had left school to focus on racing and karting.

Russell reminisced on his childhood days and having a lack of friends despite having a bubbly personality. The Briton sadly pointed out that he had to leave his school life at 13 years of age and had very few friends since then. Despite the position of an F1 driver seemingly glamorous, the 27-year-old had faced a lot of downsides that stemmed from racing at an early age. George Russell believes that his life during racing was lonely as he traveled to different countries and stayed in different hotels alone.

I left school at 13 and have very few friends to be honest. It can be a lonely life. You are in different hotels, different countries, different time zones, different climates.

George Russell told Daily Mail

However, luckily, George Russell found a great girlfriend to support him and stay with him during the majority of the races. The Briton is often spotted alongside his girlfriend Carmen Mundt at racing venues and does not write off her importance. Russell asserts that he is lucky to have Mundt around him and providing him with emotional support. The 27-year-old also called the world of F1 a ‘world of instability’ as his girlfriend helped him find some stability in the fast-paced life.

As for Carmen, I feel lucky having her around. She is my emotional support in the world of instability I live in. I wouldn’t change anything in my life now or what went before.

George Russell reveals how he gets his mind off things in F1

Many Formula 1 drivers resort to recreational activities alone or with their partners and family in order to get their minds off things. Many drivers come together and play padel during the off-season to pass the time and relax a little. Amongst the many drivers playing padel, George Russell also joins the usual group of Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and others during the off-time.

George Russell pointed out that Mondays after a race day are usually filled with emotional hangovers as the races might take a toll on the driver’s mental health. Russell explained that the next day after a race is a slap in the face if he’s on a high after winning a race, or a bad feeling if he keeps dwelling on it. As such, he prefers to dive into playing padel with other people to get his mind off things. The 27-year-old revealed that he preferred this activity over sitting at home and doom-scrolling social media.

Mondays are emotional hangover days after a race. A slap in the face if you are on a high after a good result, and a slap in the face after a bad one if you dwell on it. I play padel to get my mind off things, rather than sit inside scrolling through social media.

George Russell noted

Russell’s feelings after a race day might be much more positive this year around due to his continuous streak of impressive performances. The Briton is still trying his best to improve even more in results and start scoring race wins. Carmen Mundt will keep up with appearances at the race weekends alongside his boyfriend and provide him with great support. The season is just six races in, and many races are pending for the 27-year-old to prove his mettle to the racing grid and potentially contend for the drivers’ title.
