George Russell talked about a 'magical' scenario where Pirelli could develop a tire that would fix all the degradation issues for the drivers.

Formula 1 has continued to grow and evolve massively in recent years. The regulations are ever-changing, and the sport is trying now more than ever to make racing even more exciting. However, although these efforts have surely helped improve racing action, they are not enough. The Pirelli tire compounds used during races are sometimes uneven in degradation and cause poor racing on the track. As such, George Russell has pondered the solutions to fix the tire issues during races.

Recently, the F1 Commission held a meeting discussing whether all the F1 races needed to have a mandatory two-pit-stop rule. The sport recently introduced faster pit lane speeds at some races to potentially change tire degradation and other strategies. Moreover, the Monaco GP had a mandated two-pit-stop rule to potentially make the races more exciting. However, these changes have done more harm than good for now.

The two-pit-stop rule hasn’t been implemented, and talks have been delayed to the upcoming season. Now, George Russell talked from a driver’s perspective and how they would think about the changes. Notably, Russell said that the drivers were selfish and wanted the fastest car possible on track. Though he accepted that there were just 20 drivers on track and over 100 million people who followed the sport and their wishes needed to be met as well.

We are selfish as drivers, and you want the best, fastest, and most enjoyable cars, We have to recognise that we are one of 20 and there are 100 million plus people following the sport week in, week out, so I don’t know what the perfect solution is.

George Russell said, as reported by RacingNews365.

Further, George Russell questioned whether Pirelli was capable of creating a ‘magical’ tire that could have uneven tire degradation. The Briton reckoned that the magical tire needed to be good for 30 laps and then fall miserably in terms of grip. Further, the mediums and softs should be good for only 20 and 10 laps, respectively. Russell joked that if Pirelli could magically create such a compound, it would surely cause better racing and strategy making during races.

I mean, if you could magically create a tire, where if it is a 60 lap race, the hard tire could do 30 laps, then falls off the cliff, the medium, there are 20 laps, and it falls off the cliff, and then the soft, there are 10 laps, and it falls off the cliff. If you could magically achieve that, it would be the perfect scenario.

George Russell claims it is ‘very difficult’ for Pirelli to develop tires for all F1 circuits

Formula 1 is truly the pinnacle of motorsport, with the challengers reaching speeds well above 350 kmph (217 mph). Moreover, the track continues to develop in terms of grip and other track conditions. As such, it isn’t easy to create tires that can take the beating for so long without bursting or causing other problems. Hence, George Russell applauded Pirelli for their efforts so far and for keeping the sport thriving.

George Russell asserted that he appreciated Pirelli, as it probably wasn’t easy to develop tires for all the different F1 circuits. He added that different tracks with varying tarmac and elevation changes required significant tire development. Russell reckoned that if the tarmac were the same on all the circuits, it would probably be easy for the tire giant to develop tires that could improve racing action.

I do appreciate that for Pirelli, it is really not easy and having to develop a tire for all the different circuits, which have different tarmacs as well, it is very difficult. If the tarmacs were the same across all tracks, then it would be much easier for them to develop a tire to achieve something.

George Russell noted.

Formula 1 will continue to grow in the coming times, and the continued efforts from all the companies involved in the sport will only add to the growth. For now, Pirelli is doing just fine with its tires. If they make massive changes to the tires, they can risk causing other problems for the drivers on track. Hence, it is probably for the better now that there are no fundamental changes made to the compounds.
