- George Russell leads the 2026 F1 championship with 51 points, closely followed by Kimi Antonelli at 47 points.
- David Coulthard warns Russell that Antonelli poses a significant threat despite being teammates.
- The season is likened to the 2016 rivalry between Rosberg and Hamilton, suggesting intense competition ahead.
George Russell has started the 2026 season off on the right foot. The Briton has remained the favorite pick to win the driver’s title in the new regulations, courtesy of Mercedes’ dominant challenger. However, despite winning the Australian GP and finishing in P2 in China, Russell recognizes the threat to his maiden championship ambitions this year.
Following George Russell’s victory in Australia, Kimi Antonelli responded to it with a stellar victory at the Chinese GP. Though Russell is still leading the title charge with 51 points, Antonelli is right on his tail with 47 points. Now, former F1 driver, David Coulthard, believes that the Briton will face a stiff challenge from the 19-year-old, who will certainly not make life any easier for the former.
George knows he has a real threat for this championship. This might be, as we’ve seen with Lando and Oscar last year, McLaren reached a point where they delivered them a car and they fought for the world championship.
David Coulthard said on the Up to Speed podcast
David Coulthard asserted that George Russell was aware of Kimi Antonelli being a real threat to him in the championship battle. The Englishman recalled that the situation was similar to Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris’ situation in 2025. McLaren simply provided the cars to the drivers while they created other problems for the team. As such, Brackley can expect the same with the Silver Arrows this year.
David Coulthard recalled how Lando Norris almost lost the championship title win to Max Verstappen by two points. However, the 2026 season could finally be the one where Mercedes has a great advantage over the rivals and finally returns to their winning ways. For now, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli seem to be the only drivers capable of winning the title, as none of the teams or drivers have come near Mercedes’ pace on track.
Amazingly, they almost lost out to Max by a couple of points. But this could be the only time in this new era of F1 that Mercedes give them the advantage they’ve got.
David Coulthard added.
David Coulthard warns George Russell that Kimi Antonelli is “not your mate”
Certainly, George Russell will want to defeat Kimi Antonelli, even though they are both teammates. Russell is now aware of the Italian’s capabilities and wouldn’t take him lightly on the track. The Briton has everything to lose, while Antonelli has everything to gain as he is just in his second year in Formula 1. As such, David Coulthard warns the 28-year-old about getting too comfortable with the youngster.

David Coulthard is sure that behind the facade of being a good teammate to Kimi Antonelli, George Russell is trying to best to gain an advantage on track at the upcoming grand prixs. Meanwhile, Antonelli and his crew should do the same. Coulthard believes that the term ‘teammates’ is a misnomer, and no one is in Formula 1 to make friends.
So make no bones about it – George, behind that facade of ‘well done, Kimi’, is trying to get every advantage he can over him for Suzuka and the next grands prix, Kimi’s team should be doing the same. The name team-mates is a misnomer. He’s not your mate. If you get along with him away from the track, that’s great – but his success is your failure, and vice versa.
David Coulthard noted.
The 2026 season could be a repeat of the 2016 season, the ‘Silver War’ between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton back then. Even then, the underdog Rosberg managed to defeat Hamilton at Mercedes. As such, the first season of the new regulations could go either way. Nevertheless, it will certainly be extremely exciting to witness for both the drivers and the fans.
