The Mexican Grand Prix took an unexpected turn on lap 19 as a heated battle between rookie Liam Lawson and Red Bull driver Sergio Perez escalated into a collision. The incident, which resulted in significant damage to Perez’s car, ignited controversy and sparked tensions between the two drivers.
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has blamed the 22-year-old for the incident for battling his own colleague. Both Lawson and Perez are competing for a potential seat at Red Bull, so they want to perform well to secure their future.
On lap 19, Sergio Perez tried to overtake Liam Lawson on the inside, but they collided, causing heavy damage to Checo’s car and hurting his performance at his home race. While the 34-year-old made a brave attempt to pass, Lawson defended his position strongly. The blame for the crash was a topic for debate, but Helmut Marko pointed fingers at the 22-year-old for the incident.
The 81-year-old argued that while both drivers were at fault, Liam Lawson should have shown more respect to Perez. As a driver for the main team, Checo deserved that respect from the New Zealander.
Marko had no issue with the 22-year-old going for wheel-to-wheel battles to capitalize on positions. However, he made it clear he didn’t want Lawson to race aggressively against the Mexican or any other Red Bull Racing driver.
Sergio Perez believes Liam Lawson must be more respectful to fellow drivers
Liam Lawson was out of Formula 1 for almost a year before stepping in for VCARB replacing Daniel Ricciardo. Now that the 22-year-old is back, Sergio Perez believes that as a rookie, he needs to be respectful on the track.
This belief comes after Lawson flashed a gesture at Checo while overtaking him at the Mexican GP. The 34-year-old understands the eagerness of a rookie driver but emphasizes that it shouldn’t be shown in that way. He urges Lawson to be more modest in his approach.
Rumors suggest that Liam Lawson is a top candidate to replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull, but Yuki Tsunoda is also in the running. With four races left in the season, the excitement builds as fans eagerly wait for the decision on who will partner Max Verstappen at Red Bull.
