Adrian Newey is considered to be perhaps the best designer in the history of Formula 1. Ever since his days back in Leyton House, the Briton has grabbed attention of the entire paddock. Over the years, Newey has played a pivotal role in Red Bull’s success. Now, rumors have emerged that the 65-year-old might be looking to leave Milton Keynes for a new team.

Tensions at Red Bull have risen in the past few months due to an investigation into Christian Horner over claims of inappropriate behavior. This reportedly impacted Adrian Newey’s relationship with Horner, the man who convinced the aero-genius to join Red Bull in 2005. Unsurprisingly, rivals are keen on getting their hands on the 65-year-old if the rumors are true.

Aston Martin was reported to have offered a massive contract to Newey. Moreover, it was rumored that Ferrari was willing to offer 50% more money to the 65-year-old alongside more freedom. While, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is set to meet Newey at the Miami GP. However, the question remains, Is Red Bull aero genius Adrian Newey really worth the hype?

Adrian Newey’s talent undoubtedly the best in F1

Adrian Newey’s skills have led to historic success in the past decades. The 65-year-old even worked in IndyCar way back in the day. Newey’s work could be credited for Williams’ peak in the pinnacle of motorsport. While even Ron Dennis succumbed to the aero-genius’ ways during his stint at McLaren.

Newey laid down the foundation for Red Bull’s technical department when he joined in 2005. The 65-year-old was instrumental in establishing Milton Keynes as a front runner with seven drivers’ titles and six team’s championships. It is clear that Adrian Newey’s direction and leadership gives a team massive advantage against the rest of the competition.

Williams suffered after Newey’s departure and it could be argued that the Grove-based team never truly recovered. Although, McLaren did manage to turn things around, the Woking-based squad’s success was tarnished due to the infamous SpyGate scandal.

Why Adrian Newey might not be as effective today

Motivation is the driving force for Adrian Newey. The 65-year-old even wrote in his book, ‘How to build a car’ that he felt demotivated in the Turbo-hybrid era as Red Bull had no real chance of beating Mercedes. The Briton decided to take a step back and focus on other projects. This led to the establishment of Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

Red Bull has dominated the grid since the start of the ground-effect era. However, many attribute this success to Technical Director Pierre Wache alongside Newey. As Wache had been more involved in day-to-day operations. It could be argued that for any team hiring Adrian Newey, must ensure that the 65-year-old remains motivated for the F1 project to gain from his skills on track.

Newey has not seemed enthusiastic over F1’s 2026 regulations which might not be a good sign for prospective employers. Although, one could be assured that the 65-year-old would do his ‘magic’ once he starts using his drawing board. Moreover, harmony is key for Adrian Newey. The Briton doesn’t go well with office politics or rigid work structures, which was the reason for his McLaren fallout. Additionally, the aero-genius needs influence in all major decisions, something that led to his exit from Williams.

There are no doubts that Adrian Newey’s arrival would benefit a team substantially. However, at 65, with years of not being involved in day-to-day operations, things could be different for the Briton compared to his prime. Nevertheless, the likes of Ferrari and McLaren would be willing to sign Newey at all costs to gain a massive advantage over the rest of the grid.
