Williams was on the brink of bankruptcy at the start of the 2020 season. This dire situation made the team’s management make some tough decisions just to stay afloat. This led to major restructural changes, and James Vowles was brought in from Mercedes. However, witnessing the out-of-date practices within the team and its subpar performance, the Brit gave a reality check about where the Grove-based team currently stands.

After losing the title sponsor in 2021, it seemed to be the final nail in Williams’s coffin, that the team might not ever recover from financial instability. It was soon bought by Dorilton Capital, who made drastic changes within the team. Despite the American owner’s best efforts, the English team stayed in the lower-midfield to backmarker pack.

Observing the slow progress, James Vowles criticized the team for their wasted efforts.

There is not a single part of this company that I can be satisfied with. We are nowhere near the level of a title-worthy team. That may be a harsh statement, but unfortunately it is the truth. There is still so much to be done and so much to change before we are on the right course.
James Vowles said in an interview with Formule1.nl

The 44-year-old asserted that he could not be content with the work done by even a single part of the Grove-based squad. He admitted that this statement might appear harsh, but he stated it to be the truth. Furthermore, he claimed that there is still a lot of work to be done behind closed doors, and returning to their previous glory years might take a considerable amount of time.

Weight woes might continue into 2026 according to James Vowles

While the team has been struggling on track, Vowles recently cracked an impressive deal with Alex Albon to make him stay on board for longer. On the other hand, the Brit had previously stated that the car was overweight which might have been losing four-tenths of lap time, he thus around reckons that these woes might continue into 2026.

The 44-year-old explained how the 2026 regulations are going to be a testament to engineering.

'26 has very interesting regulations at the moment that reward weight in a way that no other championship has, because it's such a low number. I don't believe anyone can hit that.
James Vowles said in an interview with Autosport

Not much is known about the 2026 regulations except that the cars are going to be lighter and wider. However, witnessing the troubles under current regulations, he was convinced that no team would hit the weight targets initially.

Apart from this, Williams currently sits eighth in the interim constructor standings. Thus, they have the task at hand to preserve the spot and work on the later iterations of the car.
