Red Bull joined the Formula 1 paddock back in 2005 and struggled for a few years before starting to win championships. The team has always honed talented drivers and helped them achieve monumental success over the years. However, Ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya revealed how Milton Keynes ‘burned’ drivers in the sport.
Juan Pablo Montoya enjoyed a brief but impactful career back in 2001 to 2006 with a couple of constructors. Montoya was just out of Williams in 2005 when Red Bull joined the paddock and recalled that he had an offer from the team. The Colombian recalled that the team offered him just ‘2 pesos’ indicating that he was offered very less money. The 49-year-old claimed that with how long Milton Keynes took to win, they would’ve ‘burnt’ the former due to the less money offered.
Montoya didn’t hesitate to claim that by the time Red Bull was ready to fight for the championship, they would’ve gone through multiple drivers. The Colombian added that Milton Keynes blamed the drivers rather than their own shortcomings and moved on to the next driver. The 49-year-old asserted that David Coulthard was one such driver who took the seat that the former could have taken.
Juan Pablo Montoya regretted not joining a team capable of winning championships
Juan Pablo Montoya was a highly capable driver and scored over seven race wins with Williams and McLaren. The Colombian had enough racecraft to potentially contend for the world championship if provided with the right chassis. However, Montoya recounted that the only thing he needed in Formula 1 was to become a world champion. The 49-year-old regretted not having a team option to be in the car capable of winning championships.
Certainly, Red Bull has created some of the best drivers ever witnessed in Formula 1. However, the fact of burning drivers might have some weight to it especially due to the secondary drivers not being able to match up to the primary driver in terms of performance. However, the sport is continuously evolving and so is Milton Keynes as the team has improved a lot since the past.
