George Russell showcased a highly impressive performance in the 2024 season, especially against Lewis Hamilton. The 26-year-old outscored Hamilton for the second time since his debut with Mercedes in 2022. However, Russell is also famously known as the ‘nice guy’ who doesn’t cause many incidents on the track, something which also caused the decline in his championship chances.
Ex-F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya waged his opinions on George Russell‘s ‘nice guy’ reputation amongst the people. Montoya claimed that Russell had the speed to win the title, which was overshadowed by his good impression. The Colombian believed that the Briton did not want such an impression of himself and wanted people to look at him differently, as Max Verstappen pointed out recently.
Montoya also shared his thoughts on the prodigy Kimi Antonelli‘s pair-up with ‘lead’ Russell in the coming season. The 49-year-old highlighted that the two would start off as great friends in the beginning. However, if Antonelli starts to outperform his British counterpart, the friendship could deteriorate. Regardless, the Colombian was confident that the 26-year-old would be more dominant out of the two.
Juan Pablo Montoya anticipates a ‘hard’ debut season for Kimi Antonelli against George Russell
Kimi Antonelli received an opportunity to test with Mercedes’ chassis which ended in a crash for the prodigy. However, a lot of people have banked high hopes on the Italian at Mercedes. Juan Pablo Montoya reckoned that it would be hard for Antonelli to live up to the hype. Moreover, the 49-year-old pointed out the numerous crashes that the 18-year-old has been a part of in the junior categories.
Antonelli will receive great learnings from Russell’s brilliance in Formula 1. The 26-year-old seems all set to lead the team under Hamilton’s absence for the first time in a very long time. Brackley aims at contending for both championships amidst their rising performance on the grid.
