Mattia Binotto led Ferrari from 2019 to 2022 and failed to amass many impressive results with the team. The Swiss-Italian was ousted from the Italian constructor amidst failing results. However, Binotto was recently appointed as the COO/CTO of the soon-to-be Audi (currently Sauber) in F1.
Mattia Binotto’s track record isn’t the most impressive despite Audi’s massive hopes. The 54-year-old didn’t hesitate to point out the difficulty of winning the world championship with the up-and-coming constructor. Binotto reckoned that winning with Audi would be like climbing the mighty Mount Everest. The ousted Ferrari boss believed that the championship would take several years.
Sauber’s current form is extremely disappointing for Audi’s inception into the pinnacle of motorsport. After eyeing Mick Schumacher as another option, the team has already confirmed Nico Hulkenberg as the primary driver. Binotto laid out the German carmaker’s goals to fight for championships by the end of the decade.
Mattia Binotto assures ‘no risk’ amidst Sauber’s disappointing 2024 performance
F1 had recently declined Andretti’s bid to join the grid as the 11th team but allowed Audi’s acquisition of Sauber. Hence, Mattia Binotto made it clear that there were no risks involved with the team’s upcoming project. Additionally, Binotto noted that the F1 programs fit with Audi’s brand and vision.
Binotto would have to work extremely hard to showcase his talent as one of the leading figures in Audi’s F1 project. The outfit has great hopes of fighting in the mid-order of the grid after setting high goals. The German carmaker would have to interpret the new 2026 regulations in the best way possible to manage a great start to their run in Formula 1.
