Max Verstappen has remained one of the biggest critics of the 2026 season. The Dutchman is even preparing to leave the sport if he remains dissatisfied with the new rules. Amid preparations for the Australian GP, Verstappen warns the community of how the change in driver’s pecking order could be a point of massive disappointment for many.
Red Bull dominated a majority of the ground effect era from the 2022 season. But in the final years, it was McLaren who developed massively and achieved two consecutive constructors’ victories. As such, many expected that this development would be followed under the new regulations of the 2026 season.
However, Max Verstappen believes the pecking order could change significantly, and the teams that performed well in 2026 might not even be able to compete for wins anymore. Verstappen himself is wary of the challenge and is aware that he will not win the season opener Australian GP. Now, the Dutchman reveals how the upcoming season is going to be ‘pretty insane’ because of the new rules.
Max Verstappen boldly claimed that there would be a ‘big upset’ amongst the fans and the teams, as the usual dominators might not be the same on the track. The Dutchman continued that there was still a lot of unknown for the teams and drivers. Still, Verstappen hints that it will be exciting as they wouldn’t know what to expect or predict who will be the favorite to win the races over the season.
This year is going to be pretty insane with all the new rules as well, So probably a big upset as well between teams from what you have seen the last few years. And a lot still unknown. Also for us, we don’t know what to expect really. And I think that also makes it very exciting for everyone watching, not knowing, you know, what’s going to happen.
Max Verstappen told Apple TV.
Max Verstappen labels 2026 F1 rules change as “biggest change in over 10 years”
Multiple drivers have revealed how the regulation changes are a massive shift from the previous ones. Lewis Hamilton even called the changes the biggest ones he had witnessed in his career. Now, Max Verstappen joined the same chain of thoughts and explained how the change was the biggest one, atleast over the past decade.

Max Verstappen boldly claimed that the regulation changes were the biggest ones he had witnessed in well over ten years. Though he insisted that it was exciting at the same time. Verstappen highlighted that the driving style evolved over the years, but the basics of it all remained the same. Hence, the four-time champion looks forward to quite the change in the upcoming year.
It’s a big change, I mean honestly it’s like the biggest change in over 10 years. It’s exciting at the same time. As a driver as well when you have done driving like a car for quite a few years in a row, of course it evolves but the basics are the same. And that will change a little bit or quite a bit this year.
Max Verstappen noted.
Despite the fears from the teams and drivers, a shakeup in the pecking order will certainly be an exciting ordeal. Many drivers are looking forward to the challenge and developing over the season.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen will also try his hand at various categories of motorsport, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans being the next priority alongside Mercedes. Only time will tell about how Verstappen manages to perform under the new rules, and if he decides to quit the sport overall because of the radical shift.
