Formula 1 has continued to be dominant in the European region ever since its inception back in 1950. A majority of the historic racing tracks in the current calendar are majorly European. Moreover, over ten races from the 24 ran in the 2024 season were from different places in Europe. As a result, Belgian GP promoters revealed the sport’s plans to reduce the number of races in Europe.

The Belgian GP ran around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is one of the oldest racing tracks used in Formula 1. The Spa circuit recently secured a long-term contract extension but with a massive twist. The races would be run at the Belgian circuit until 2031 with 2028 and 2030 not being included. This meant that the Belgian GP would be part of the rotation of racing venues in the two excluded years.

The exact reason behind this change still seems somewhat unclear. However, Belgian GP promoter Melchior Wathelet revealed the challenges he faced while negotiating the contract extension. Wathelet highlighted that the negotiations were ‘complicated’ due to Formula 1 wanting to include only eight races in Europe. As a result, it was difficult to secure a long-term deal for the Spa circuit.

We are very satisfied. These negotiations have been complicated. Formula 1 only wants eight races in Europe, and it has been difficult to get a long-term deal.

Formula 1 also increased the cost of renewal for the Belgian GP

Formula 1 has continued to gain massive traction, especially in recent years. This upturn in engagement has also caused the valuation of the sport to rise multiplefolds. As a result, Melchior Wathelet revealed that he also had to pay an increased sum for the renewal. Wathelet believed that the 3-4% increase in cost was ‘reasonable’ partly due to the increased inflation around the world.

The amount is higher since 2026, it has grown by 3-4%. We think it’s a reasonable increase, it’s an understandable inflation that we think we can even out.

Melchiro Wathelet noted.

The Belgian GP run around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit continues to be a massive fan favorite especially due to the iconic eau-rouge corner. Hence, the circuit’s absence in the two years would definitely be a bit harsh on the eager fans of the race. Regardless, such rotations will allow more newer generation of circuits to participate and witness how it fares in terms of attendance.
