“His father Michael and Mercedes were already closely linked,” Lewis Hamilton expresses his excitement to work with Mick Schumacher
Lewis Hamilton and Mick Schumacher
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have a new teammate at Mercedes as a third driver will be added to the Mercedes squad next year. That driver is none other than Mick Schumacher. The german will be taking the reserve role and help the team with their charge for the 2023 F1 season. However, he isn’t the first Schumacher to have joined Mercedes.
Back in 2010, when Mercedes came back to the sport, they approached Mick Schumacher’s dad, 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher. The German further proceeded to come out of retirement to join the team and had a part in rebuilding it. Whilst his second stint in the sport didn’t bring much success, it surely set a path for the future of Mercedes.
And almost a decade later, it had been announced that his son, Mick Schumacher will be joining the team. Lewis Hamilton said that he looks forward to working with Schumacher but also went on to specify that the roles of a reserve driver aren’t as similar as they were a decade ago. With the team being more reliant on data, the German would spend his time in the simulator.
Lewis Hamilton gives a perspective about how he will work with Mick Schumacher
Here is what the 7 time world champion had to say about his new teammate. You don’t work so closely with the reserve driver these days. It’s a lot of simulator work and not like before, even though we remain teammates,” he told Bild. “He is a German driver. His father Michael and Mercedes were already closely linked,” he continued.
After his contract was not renewed by Haas F1 team, everyone thought that Mick Schumacher won’t be seen in the paddock next year. However, it seems like he will make multiple appearances having bagged the job of reserve driver at Mercedes. This means that he will also be able to take either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell’s car out for a swing in one of the free practice sessions during the season.
