Adrian Newey is considered a genius in the world of motorsport. The Briton has designed some of the most iconic machinery in Formula 1 including the 2023 Red Bull RB-19. However, there was a time when the 65-year-old flirted with the idea of leaving Milton Keynes. Now, Newey has made it clear that he intends to stay with the Austrian team in the coming years.

The 65-year-old was asked if he enjoyed being part of Red Bull. Newey gave a firm reply as he expressed his desire to stay with the Austrian team. Moreover, the aero genius mentioned the difference between his stint at Milton Keynes to his tenures at Williams and McLaren. The Briton cited that the latter two teams were already championship winners with all the necessary infrastructure in place. As such, the two British teams simply needed improvements on the design side.

Absolutely... When I joined Williams and McLaren, then they were two great teams that had won races and championships way before I ever arrived, so there was very little required on the infrastructure side, it was really just hopefully just trying to bring a bit on the design side.

On the other hand, when Adrian Newey joined Red Bull in 2006, it was regarded as a risky move. As the Austrian team was essentially a carryover from Jaguar in its first season. However, Newey mentioned that he wanted to be part of such a project where he could help in laying down the foundations of a new team.

Whereas, and that’s really why I joined Red Bull, it was a bit of a career risk at the time, but I just wanted that sort of involvement again of being involved with the development of the team right at the start.

Adrian Newey won’t walk away from Red Bull Racing

Moreover, Newey highlighted that Red Bull’s success was courtesy of the efforts put in by Christian Horner, Dr. Helmut Marko, and himself. The three top figures transformed Milton Keynes into one of the most successful F1 teams in history. Subsequently, the 65-year-old could not see any reason to leave the squad.

In that sense, having been involved in the start with Christian [Horner] and Helmut [Marko], how we developed the team, then why would I want to walk away from that?

Interestingly, Newey had almost decided to leave Red Bull for Ferrari at the start of the Turbo Hybrid era. Although, the Briton cited the lack of determination from Renault’s management regarding the power units as a cause for such a move. Ultimately, Christian Horner convinced Adrian Newey to stay at Red Bull and even allowed the Briton to make road cars with the inception of Red Bull Advanced Technologies.

Red Bull will soon run its own power units in Formula 1. The Austrian giant has invested heavily in Red Bull Powertrains along with a partnership with American carmaker Ford. This would allow Milton Keynes to have complete control of all aspects of its car from 2026, ensuring that Adrian Newey’s design expertise does not struggle with underwhelming power units.
