Alex Albon reveals ‘value of success’ is the main difference between the mighty Red Bull and Williams F1 team

Alex Albon has joined hands with the Williams Formula One team for the current season of the sport, and after having 13 rounds in their car, believes the main difference between Red Bull and Williams is the value of success.

Alex Albon so far has had a rollercoaster ride in the pinnacle of motor racing as he was promoted to Red Bull midway during the 2019 season from Toro Rosso to partner alongside the prolific Max Verstappen.

However, at the end of 2020, Albon was shown the exit door in favor of Sergio Perez and had no option but to sit on the sidelines for the 2021 season of the sport only to make a return this year with Williams.

The Wantage-based team in comparison to Red Bull has been fighting at the bottom end of the grid but the Thai-British driver is still enjoying his life at his new team.

Moreover, has indicated that driving for Williams has changed his definition of success and while talking about it said, “When there’s a team that’s looking to win, of course when you finish P6 or P7, that’s not really a good thing. Whereas for us we’re not really where we want to be this year but when we execute perfectly and the car is in its window, we can get points and we can fight up the midfield.”

The main difference between changing teams is the value of success and what is a good weekend. Sometimes you can be out in Q1, but actually, you felt like the lap was really good, like the car was good. You felt like as a team, you maximized everything.”

And you have to take that as a positive even if on reflection it may not seem to the outside like it was.”

Albon has admitted that he had a bit of rust at the start of the 2022 season but believes as the year has progressed he has become better. The former Red Bull driver has out-qualified his teammate Nicholas Latifi 11-2 and has scored the 3 points, that after 13 rounds, are the only points that Williams has put on the board.

Albon further added, “I feel like it’s gone really well, of course, having a year out and not being in the car, inevitably – especially through testing and the first couple of races – there was a little bit of feeling like finding your feet.”

But I have to say even with that, I still felt as prepared and as ready as everyone else around me. Because I think with the change in the rules it all started to level itself out quite a lot.

It’s very hard to say where the limit is relative to last year. I mean, it’s a completely different car, you can’t really make comparisons.”

But I do feel like there have been cases where we’ve got points at times when we had no reason to be there and they’re the races that really mean a lot.”

Alex Albon has signed a multi-year deal with Williams and has revealed that driving for them comes with less pressure as compared to when he was doing his trade for the Red Bull F1 team. However, believes most of the pressure is still self-imposed.

While stressing over it, Albon said, “You could say there’s less of a spotlight. In terms of expectation or pressure or anything, there’s less noise, but at the same time the criticism at least always comes from within.”

You know, I’ve said that before. I’m my harshest critic. It sounds bad but I don’t really care what people say, it’s really kind of self-evaluation on that side.”

There’s maybe less of the noise, but at the same time I’m always – I’m gonna say – not happy.”

Alex has shown himself very well in the lesser machinery of Williams this season and has admitted that he has always been his harshest critic whenever has not been able to perform at a certain level.

Williams is a work in progress that is slowly trying to work it’s up on the grid and considering that Albon has signed a multi-year deal with the team, he has shown a lot of faith in the ability of the Wantage-based outfit to improve year-on-year.

The current season has got only 9 races to go and Williams at the moment is plumb last in the Championship. How many points can you realistically see Albon and Co. scoring during the business end of the season?
