Alfa Romeo eyes a title sponsorship deal after fallout with Sauber

Alfa Romeo F1 team

Alfa Romeo and Sauber have decided to not continue their partnership moving into the 2023 season after staying as their title sponsor for so long. There have been multiple reports connecting the F1 team to Audi who recently revealed that they plan to enter Formula 1 in 2026. This solidified the rumours of a possible collaboration between the two parties. With time we could get to know more about this ongoing potential relationship.

Audi plans to enter Formula 1 in 2026 where new regulations will come into play facilitating their entry into the sport. After the Alfa Romeo and Sauber partnership ends in 2023, the team will partner up with the German automotive giant. Audi will possibly buy a 75% stake in Sauber and become the new owners of the team. Once the deal is finalised, it will be certain that the team will be powered by Audi engines from the start of 2026. This has left the Italian car company in a tough position.

With the team choosing to not renew their contract, it is clear that Alfa Romeo still wants to be in the sport which meant that they would have to find another team. The team that they have approached is F1’s only American team called Haas. The two parties have reportedly started talks, although according to renowned F1 Journalist Joe Saward, it doesn’t seem like the deal will go through. According to Joe, Alfa came in with the same proposition that they gave to Sauber saying that they would supply the engines to the team on behalf of Ferrari.

This means that Haas could save up on some massive costs. Their last two title sponsorship deals have ended in a very drastic manner which is why they will be extra careful when it comes to any risks posed by the opposing party. Although Joe Saward has reported that a big American entity will be funding the team for 3 years which cancels out the possibility of a title sponsorship position for Alfa Romeo.

There aren’t many other teams on the grid that will be willing to partner up with the Italian clothing brand as Williams chooses to keep the heritage name meanwhile the possibility to join AlphaTauri is far less. This could mean a sabbatical for Alfa Romeo for a year until there is another opportunity available. Although anything could happen and nothing should be cancelled out as of now.
