Alpine targets Pierre Gasly for 2023 with Oscar Piastri no longer a priority

Alpine F1 team has been in the eyes of the media since the start of the summer break, and now after the Belgian Grand Prix, F1 analyst Craig Slater has indicated that the French team no longer sees Oscar Piastri as an option but wants Pierre Gasly to drive for them in 2023.

When Fernando Alonso announced his move to Aston Martin for the next season, Piastri was promoted by Alpine to race alongside Esteban Ocon, however, the 21-year-old had other plans and dismissed the team’s statement publicly by saying he is not going to drive for them next season. Since then there is a lot of bad blood between the two parties.

Moreover, the Contract Recognition Board has started looking into Oscar Piastri’s contract with Alpine and the French stable is confident that the board is going to make a ruling in their favor.

Alpine has made a firm decision to give up their chase of the Australian for next season and has switched their attention towards the current AlphaTauri starlet Pierre Gasly.

Pierre Gasly is contracted with the Red Bull sister team till the end of next season, but it is believed that the Laurent Rossi-led French team is trying to find a way to prize the 26-year-old away from AlphaTauri.

If somehow Alpine is able to secure the services of Gasly for the 2023 F1 season, then the team will have an exciting all-french lineup with Ocon and Gasly.

However, Esteban and Pierre have had a stressed relationship since their karting days and this could prove to be a stumbling block in the team’s attempt to get the AlphaTauri driver.

Esteban Ocon has recently revealed that he prefers Mick Schumacher to partner with him next season but has also stressed that he would have no problem if the team goes for his fellow Frenchman.

The silly driver season of F1 is in full swing and considering the shenanigans that have already taken place regarding the second seat on the Alpine team, it is anybody’s guess at the moment who ultimately is going to end up alongside Ocon for next season.
