The Dakar Rally has been around for a long time and over the years, has given motorsports fans, some memorable moments. However, it has also proved fatal for some of the participants.

It has come to light that yesterday, Spanish motorcycle rider, Carles Falcon died more than a week after having a horrific crash at the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. He had been in a medically induced coma since getting to the hospital on Jan 7.

Moreover, at the time of the incident, Race director, David Castera told reporters that the rider was competing in the endurance event for the second time. Since Falcon’s death, his team, TwinTrail Racing via Instagram, has said,

Carles has left us. The medical team has confirmed that the neurological damage caused by the cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of the accident is irreversible.

The 46th edition of the rally competition, held in Saudi Arabia for the fifth time. It features a prologue and has twelve stages that are spread out over 4,903 miles from Alula in the north to Yanbu on the Red Sea.

The event first began in 1978 as a race from Paris to Senegalese capital of Dakar

However, the Dakar Rally was moved to South America in 2009 and then to Saudi Arabia in 2020. It has now become the flagship event of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile world rally-raid championship.

Rallying has always been a very physical task for the competing teams and the racers. The spot has seen a massive surge in its popularity in recent times and it is set to continue in this trend for many years.
