As Charles Leclerc braces for Ferrari’s home Grand Prix, he addresses the ‘Tifosi’, laying out his realistic expectations. Leclerc supposedly has had a lacklustre 2023 season leading up to the Italian GP as Red Bull continue to dominate. Despite it being the venue of one of his greatest triumphs in Fomula 1, Charles Leclerc says a win looks unachievable at Monza in 2023.
The Monégasque was asked what he would say to the ‘Tifosis’ in a recent media interaction. Leclerc answered,“Objectively, I’m only happy when I win. But for sure, if we look at the situation we are in right now, it’s going to be really difficult to win.” Ferrari hasn’t been able to make a race-winning car in 2023 that can compete with Red Bull’s RB-19, and even fans of the fabled Prancing Horse will find some truth in Leclerc’s words.
Charles won the Italian GP in 2019, giving Ferrari their first victory on home soil in almost a decade. He defended continued attacks from Lewis Hamilton and the then Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas to secure the tallest podium place. As the memories of the win are still quite fresh in the minds of the ‘Tifosis’, they want a repeat of that glorious outing But unfortunately, Charles Leclerc feels the feat is impossible.
Carlos Sainz believes Ferrari can win a race this season
Sainz stepped up to P5 in the Driver’s Championship after a resilient drive at the Dutch GP and he has now set his eyes upon another victory. The Spanish driver foresees a ‘slip-up’ from Red Bull as he banks on himself capitalising and snatching a win for Ferrari when they do.
“I know what my chances or my probabilities are, but there’s still a probability that Ferrari can win a race this season and that I can be there to win it. And I think no one’s perfect. Hopefully, at some point during the season, Red Bull makes a mistake and I go into every weekend thinking I need to be there to grab it,” said Carlos Sainz.
Carlos Sainz is yet to achieve a podium finish in 2023 and has only one win to his name – at the 2022 British Grand Prix. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares at the Italian GP. But it is true that all the ‘Tifosis’ will want a giant Red Bull error so that the Austrian team does not snatch a victory at the Maranello outfit’s backyard.
