Charles Leclerc’s stolen Richard Mille watch reduced to a fraction of the price due to one SMALL detail
Charles Leclerc
Back in April, when in the Tuscan town of Viareggio, Ferrari superstar, Charles Leclerc, had his watch snatched by thieves when posing for pictures with fans. His trainer, Andrea Ferrari, had posted on Instagram saying:
“Via Salvatori has been completely in the dark for months. We have been reporting this for months. Well, yesterday evening in Via Salvatori, they have robbed us. Think of arranging the lamps sooner or later? Asking for a friend.”
Apparently, the thieves had approached Leclerc under the guise of taking a selfie, and then had nabbed the watch, and escaped on a scooter, despite the Monegasque’s best efforts to chase them down. A similar model had been sold for around 2.2 million dollars earlier, and this watch was worth apparently at least $320,000. Of course, Leclerc is not the only driver to have a watch stolen.
Lando Norris had gone through a similar ordeal following the EURO 2020 final at Wembley, where he had his approximately watch worth approximately 40,000 pounds stolen. According to formulapassion.it, Leclerc’s watch could have been worth around 2 million euros, but due to an instantly recognizable detail, it was instead depreciated to around 10% of the price.
Charles Leclerc’s signature made the piece easily recognizable
Il Mattino, a newspaper based in Naples, has provided some details of the robbery. According to them, the three robbers that approached and stole Leclerc’s watch are well-known figures in the Neapolitan crime scene. While they would have been celebrating the theft of a lifetime, they were given a bit of a shock when they found out a crucial detail.
The value of the watch instantly depreciated due to a dedication on the watch from Richard Mille towards Charles Leclerc. A screen printing and the signature of Leclerc meant that the watch was almost instantly recognizable, easier to identify, and much harder to sell. An initial valuation of 2 million thus became only around 200 thousand.
The robbers had hoped to sell the watch at around 1 million euros, which was half the original value, but the investigation team, led by deputy commissioner Raffaele Giardiello concluded that the watch must have sold for a much lower figure abroad, and the watch could have been sold to a Spanish entrepreneur who would have paid around 200 thousand euros for the piece.
