Liberty Media’s takeover of F1 in 2016 has been the key factor in the explosive growth of the sport’s popularity in the United States. Amidst the increasing viewership, F1 decided to cash in as much as possible by introducing Las Vegas GP as the third race in the States. Red Bull principal Christian Horner recently shared his thoughts on one of the most anticipated races of the season.

Horner mentioned the 2016 U.S. GP, where the attendance was nearly 270,000. The number increased to 440,000 in 2022. He said that pop artist Taylor Swift’s concert held at the same time there was the main reason they could even gather that much audience.

As the sport’s popularity increased dramatically over the years, Horner joked that in the current situation, Taylor Swift would be lucky if she even got in. He said that while they have already seen such immense growth, the Las Vegas GP will take that to a different stage.

“If you remember Austin a few years ago, we had to get Taylor Swift to get a crowd there! Now, she’s lucky if she’s allowed in! It’s changed so much..,Las Vegas will just take it to another level,” Horner told ESPN Unlapped.

The Las Vegas GP is just three months away now. It will take place on 19th November at 11.30 am IST. As the date approaches, F1’s developments to make the circuit suitable for racing keep getting fast-tracked. While they are still on schedule, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei has said there are a lot of inflationary cost pressures.

It is reported that the paddock construction is now nearly 85% complete. Maffei expressed his confidence in the race, believing they would hit their projected revenue and profit numbers. He said that they have worked in a compressed timeline, with inflation causing troubles for them as well.

“We remain confident in the return profile of this incredible project… Much of our cost increase is attributed to track-related expenses incurred to be responsive to the concerns of the local community, such as minimising disruption to businesses along the Strip,” said Maffei.

The Las Vegas GP is set to be a night race. Being hosted on a Saturday night in one of the most glamorous cities in the world, this event will be one to attend for all F1 fans.
