Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has had a rollercoaster of a season this year. The Mexican scored a couple of wins at the beginning of the season. However, Checo witnessed a massive performance slump in the latter half of the season. The paddock floated rumors of an ‘ultimatum’ that claimed Red Bull would fire Perez if he failed to score P2 in the championship standings following the uncertain performance.

The team boss, Christian Horner, has been very vocal in declining these rumors. Horner had negated these claims before, and before the Brazilian GP, the boss commented on it again. He claimed things aren’t so ‘automatic’ and circumstances must be considered before firing a driver.

I confirm that Checo doesn’t have to finish second to still have his seat, things aren’t so automatic. You have to consider the circumstances. Perez has a deal with Red Bull for next year, our intention is for him to be in the car in 2024.

Horner told formulapassion.it.

The British boss claimed that Perez would be in the team regardless of a ‘non-P2 finish’ in the championship from Perez. Following an early exit at the Mexican GP, Horner added that Perez faced a few ‘unfortunate episodes’ and reclaimed faith in the veteran driver.

We will give him all the support he can to finish second, but there is no prerequisite for which if he does not finish second he is out. He has three races to get to second place. He suffered some unfortunate episodes. But we are still convinced that he can do it from here to the end of the year

Ahead of the sprint weekend, Horner claimed that Checo has always been strong on the street circuits. The Red Bull boss also amplified the team’s faith in the driver’s capabilities and defended the driver despite the newfound hate that he received.

The sprint weekend and the street circuit of Las Vegas will favor Checo’s driving style. The team and boss shower their full faith in the 33-year-old veteran and expect greater results from him and accomplish something the team has never done before.
