Christian Horner assisted with the decision by Volkswagen: “It would be logical for us to have discussions about potential cooperation”

Christian Horner

Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal seemed pretty happy with the news of Audi and Porsche after the parent company declared the brands to open up in the sport. He sees one of them as a potential engine provider for the engine regulations hitting in 2026.

After the Japanese company, Honda backed from F1 last season, it left the drink company with no engines to take care of the 2022 season. Allowing them to start their own power unit, the RBPT (Red Bull Power Unit) which is assisted by Honda.

However, lately we saw the RBPT suffering from reliability issues causing the team and the drivers to lose a lot of points. Holding them behind Ferrari by 11 points. So it’s pretty evident and logical why red bull would love to go for a new engine supplier or help them continue the journey they started of building their very own Power Train.

With talks of Audi going with Mclaren, which is now denied by CEO Zak Brown, the Austrian team is more in contact with the German Powerhouse Porsche.

Matching the views of the principal as well “We are starting a new journey as a power unit manufacturer for 2026 so, of course, it would be logical for us to have discussions about potential cooperation.”

Miami: An important test for Christian Horners Red Bull

Red Bull and Ferrari in Miami
Red Bull, Ferrari

After the Friday session, we saw driver Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen driving the RB18 for the first time at Miami International Autodrome. With the Mexican having s decent Practice session, finishing P4 in the first practice, P3 in the second and P1 in the final practice session, he seemed to be ready for the weekend.

But the struggles of the Imola Grand Prix champion Max Verstappen don’t really seem to end. With all the mechanical issues he had with his car he only managed to get 5 laps done on the Friday session, barely managing his car into the Pits after it stopped steering.

Anyway, Horner didn’t seem satisfied with the way RB18 started the weekend. He, however, appreciated the welcome, people in Miami gave to the first Grand Prix.

The reception we have had, the interest that there is in the sport is fantastic. We had a horrible day with Max yesterday, I think we have understood those issues but we had a pretty decent day with Checo.”

Miami is a challenging track, being new and known conditions team will have to go through. Making the much more interesting for us to look forward to.
