The FIA announced on the second of October that the Andretti Cadillac’s bid to join F1 had been accepted as the FIA found their proposal interesting. Multiple team leaders and racers on the track were reluctant to this expansion as the prize pot would have to be divided into 11 teams instead of 10. Driver and team owners gave a mixed response to the news during the Qatar GP.
Audi is supposed to join F1 by 2026, but they are partnering with other teams. They have bought Sauber and Ford, joining Red Bull as a Technical Partner. Red Bull Team Principle Christian Horner believes Andretti Cadillac should build their engines and join the sport following the path of Ford or Audi.
As Ford is also set to join the grid by 2026, Horner talks about the All-American battle, as reported by Autosport.com, and says, “Ford Vs General Motors would be fantastic.” But I think [Andretti] needs to do their engine.” Christian Horner raises his concerns over adding a new team and says, “The FIA is the regulator, Liberty is the promoter, and therefore, they control the funding of the sport, and how is that going to be funded?”
Horner feels that Andretti-GM could be taking part in F1 by becoming an engine supplier and then acquiring a team on the grid, just like how Audi is doing, “When you look at how Audi is coming into the sport, they’ve acquired an existing team (Sauber), and an existing franchise.”
Horner calls for Liberty and FIA to reach a collective decision
Red Bull boss Horner feels that it is about time that Liberty and FIA need to be together in this and added, “Should it be different for others? I think that’s where Liberty and the FIA need to get together.”
Horner also asks for a decision that is in the interest of everyone and that they should take a “collective decision.” He also thinks that this bid for Andretti to join the grid could be successful.
Red Bull seems set to join almost every other team on the F1 grid when it comes to opposing Andretti’s bid to join the grid. Now it is in the hands of the FOM and the FIA to decide the next step for all these entities.
