Colton Herta gets the golden opportunity to test at McLaren
Colton Herta
For Woking-based racing team McLaren, Colton Herta will make an appearance. The American may get a chance later on in the season during the first free practise session, but for now, he will gain distance in an outdated McLaren.
Herta will have a chance to compete in Formula 1 this year, as McLaren initially declared earlier in 2022. Herta competes in IndyCar for Michael Andretti’s team and has earlier been suggested as a potential F1 driver for the American squad. Although it is not yet the case, McLaren provides Herta with a temporary fix.
Colton Herta opens an avenue for Americans in F1
Colton Herta might have an opportunity in free practice later on in the season because McLaren is required to drive with two novices. Herta meets that criteria, but he must first get experience of driving in an F1 car.
He will have the opportunity to do that this week when he participates in Portimao on Monday and Tuesday. He will travel there in the 2021 MCL35M. Will Stevens will take over on Wednesday. Stevens, a former F1 driver for Caterham and Manor, currently drives for McLaren in the simulator.
22-year-old American @ColtonHerta will test for the team in Portimão as part of our MCL35M car testing programme.
The opportunity for Colton comes with the new F1 sporting regulations, which enable teams to test one-year-old cars. Learn more. ?

Herta will have the opportunity to pilot their F1 car, according to McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl, who spoke about this in Spielberg. It is an opportunity for the number 10 driver in the current IndyCar championship to demonstrate his abilities and an opportunity to gain some expertise driving a vehicle like that. Prior to forcing a test during a free practice, McLaren wants to determine who is capable.
