Damon Hill, the 1996 F1 World Champion, has asked Mercedes to deliberately slow the progress of W14 and perform poorly during the remaining 2023 season. He feels that this way, Mercedes would get additional wind tunnel time compared to Red Bull and be able to challenge for the Championship next year.

The Brackley-based team made a solid step in improving the W14 in Spain, and that knock-on effect is being seen at the Gilles-Villeneuve F1 Circuit. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell topped the timing sheets during the FP2 session and showed an incredible one-lap pace that proved too much for its competitors.

However, despite this, Damon has asked the Brackley-based outfit to start sandbagging its car. He is quoted by the Mirror saying, “Ironically, the better Mercedes do [in 2023] the less scope they’ve got for the following year. You kind of wonder whether Mercedes ought to be thinking about doing really badly between now and the end of the year.

I think when you’ve got the budget and you can spend it but you can’t because you did so well the previous season, then it kind of makes you wonder whether you ought to do really badly. If you’re not going to win this year, you want to win next year.” Hill feels if Mercedes finishes lower in the Championship, the team would get the opportunity to utilize its maximum resources in the development of next year’s car.

While Damon Hill has asked Mercedes to sandbag its car for the rest of the campaign, the team is looking very much in the mix to secure the victory in Sunday’s Canadian GP. Friday proved extremely solid for the team, and if Lewis Hamilton and George Russell can qualify well, the team would be in a strong position for the race.

However, it will not be easy for the Brackley-based team to get the better of the mighty Red Bull. Max Verstappen has been in red-hot form during the ongoing campaign and would probably pose a huge challenge. In the 7 races which have taken place so far, the Dutcham has secured victory in five of them.

Moreover, Sergio Perez can also come up with surprises now and then. Considering everything, would Mercedes follow the advice of Hill and sandbag its car for the race, or do you see them putting everything into winning its first race of the ongoing Formula 1 campaign?
