Danica Patrick, a former IndyCar and NASCAR driver, is the most successful woman in American open-wheel car racing. She won the 2008 Indy Japan 300 and became the only woman to win a race in the IndyCar Series. She knows a thing or two about being successful in a male-dominated sport. The 41-year-old helped break barriers in the sport and inspired many. However, she is also known for her questionable remarks.
On Sunday, during the Hungarian Grand Prix, Danica Patrick shared her views on women in the sport. Her comments surprised the motorsports world as many fans felt it was misogynistic. When asked if she would like to see women compete in F1, Patrick told a young girl on the Sky F1 Juniors broadcast that the nature of the sport is masculine and aggressive. The fans criticized Patrick for her bizarre comments.
Danica Patrick stated in the Sky F1 Juniors broadcast, “You have to, you know, handle the car – not only just the car because that’s a skill, but the mindset that it takes to be really good is something that’s not normal in a feminine mind, a female mind.” Fans claimed that it was stereotypical and fumed at her remarks. Patrick also explained to the child that she goes “into an aggressive kill mode” and said, “It’s not a natural feminine thought.”

Here is how the fans reacted to Danica Patrick’s comments
Though the fans had mixed opinions, the majority were disappointed in her. One user commented, “Yes, you need an aggressive mindset, but there is nothing inherently masculine or feminine about it. It’s a personality trait. Not a gender trait.” Some fans defended her by saying it is her perspective and that “She’s a great driver and athlete, but she’s not a very calculated or thoughtful speaker.”
The fact that Danica Patrick shared these thoughts with a young girl angered many. “Also, to say that in front of children is a bit much,” and “WHY WOULD SHE SAY THIS ON A BROADCAST FOR CHILDREN” were two comments. The fans claimed it was a weird take by Patrick and explained that being competitive is not only a male trait. Take a look at other reactions below.
It is safe to say that fans were disappointed with Danica Patrick’s coverage and demanded a change. The former NASCAR and IndyCar driver has achieved plenty in the sport, but her opinion about female drivers is quite surprising. Though her intentions were unclear, the comments certainly sparked controversy.
