AlphaTauri racer Daniel Ricciardo was involved in a horrific crash during yesterday’s Free Practice 2 session ahead of the Dutch GP. Initially, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri went into the wall and as Ricciardo was approaching the same area, he had nowhere to go to escape the damage. Daniel’s AT04 collided with the wall at high speed, fracturing one of his wrists.
Daniel Ricciardo is devastated with how the Free Practice 2 session panned out for him. He came into the second leg with a lot of enthusiasm for hitting the ground running straightaway, but unfortunately, he is now sidelined for an unknown period of time because of his wrist injury.
While shedding light on the same, he told Motorsport, “Obviously, I’d love to get back soon, but I also want to ensure we do things the right way, so I come back strong and competitive.” Looking at the comments of the 34-year-old, it is quite clear that while he wants to make a speedy recovery, he does not want to overdo things in his quest to get back on the grid.
He has so far had two outings for the Faenza-based team and has impressed quite a few people up and down the grid. Moreover, to the surprise of many he was able to somewhat match his teammate and was also at one of his outings able to come extremely close to scoring points for AlphaTauri.
Daniel Ricciardo wishes Liam Lawson well ahead of his AlphaTauri outing
While Daniel Ricciardo has been sidelined for an unknown period of time, Liam Lawson has been called upon by Helmut Marko and Co. to take on the mantle of driving the AT04. Ricciardo since hearing the news has wished the New Zealander all the best and said, “I wish the team well, and I’m sorry for the change in plans again. It’s a chance for Liam to have a go, and I wish him and the team a strong weekend.”
While the former eight-time Grand Prix winner has wished the best of luck for Lawson, it is not going to be easy for the rookie to get on top of the lackluster AT04. It has proved to be an extremely difficult car to drive and it was one of the reasons why Nyck De Vries was not able to properly showcase his skills during the first ten races of the ongoing campaign.
Taking everything into account that has been discussed above, the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix is going to be a fascinating watch at least, for the supporters of the Faenza-based team. Liam Lawson has previously driven in a few Free Practice sessions in F1, but to date, he is a relatively untested commodity.
