“Don’t d*ck with it” : Christian Horner strongly condemns the FIA’s proposal for changes to the technical regulations in 2023

After a status report on the excessive porpoising technical directive was released prior to the British Grand Prix, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner posted a warning to F1 and the FIA to not “d*ck” with the laws. To address the “safety issue” concerning the violent bouncing that drivers faced, most noticeably at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the TD was contentiously introduced in Canada two weeks ago.

In an attempt to get the FIA to intervene, Horner said Mercedes was pleading with its drivers to “b*tch” about problems they were experiencing as a consequence of the bouncing. Horner has been vociferous against technical regulations being changed mid-season. In order to create a gauge that assesses the vertical acceleration pressures encountered by drivers in each car, F1’s regulatory body collected information from Montréal. A hard-and-fast approach is expected to be implemented in France.

However, in order to adapt, teams would be required to make significant philosophical modifications to their cars, or the technical rules might be completely changed. “It is too late in the day to be introducing changes for next year. We haven’t governed for that and the cost involved… sometimes the unintended consequences for changing philosophies, it will affect what you carry over and it will affect the design and development. The most important thing and biggest way to achieve stable costs is stability. The cars will converge,” said the team principal.

Christian Horner addresses the new metrics

Mercedes suffered greatly in Baku from porpoising troubles, although it is assumed that all 10 teams would have operated inside the revised metric parameters in Canada the previous race. Horner acknowledged that the new metric was “very difficult.” The issue with it is how long the measurement is taken over, as well as specific incidences and other things of that nature.

“When you look at it from a purist point of view, it is not ideal because it seems we are giving more and more influence to the FIA to dictate more and more what your set-up is. At what point do they say you have to run a certain rear wing or a certain ride height. It is a dangerous avenue to go down,” mentioned Horner.

The team principal of the Austria-based racing team concluded, “I understand on the grounds of safety that this is being introduced because the porpoising on a limited amount of cars is obviously at an extreme level. They [the FIA] are keen to have a mechanism to control that but hopefully it is only something that will be there for this year as it is something that hopefully all the teams will be on top of and cars will converge next year. It is certainly not a precedent that we want to set otherwise set-ups will be dictated by FIA directives.”
