MotoGP and Formula 1 are the pinnacles of motorcycling and motorsport, respectively. The fans try to make time for both events in case of an overlap. However, the two racing series do not coincide much. The overlapping dates are mostly avoided. Now, there might be a possibility of double the thrill. Dorna and Liberty Media are considering holding both MotoGP and Formula 1 races on the same GP weekend. This means both races will be held at the same track on the same weekend.

It is only fair for every racing fan to imagine an electrifying atmosphere if both series are held on the same weekend. The CEO of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, confirmed that he spoke with F1’s Stefano Domenicali about sharing a date. It is most likely that the conversation was held in Portimao, the season opener for MotoGP, as Domenicali attended the racing event.

Ezpeleta stated, “It’s something that crossed the minds of Stefano and me, although at the moment it can’t be done. But we are studying the possibility. We’re going to study it because it’s not a simple thing. There are security problems because our measures in some cases do not coincide with yours. There are also problems with sponsors… but we keep thinking.”

If the project were to take place, it would be beyond 2027. There are several challenges to putting the idea into practice. The Dorna CEO clarified, “We have to see why we need bigger escapes that are more difficult in non-permanent circuits. We have a contract with the circuits until 2027. It would be for later.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta was asked if Madrid would be the ideal place to host both MotoGP and Formula 1. The Spaniard did not confirm or deny. However, he did mention he discussed it with the mayor. “We are thinking about this. Stefano told me about a circuit in Madrid and I spoke with the mayor of Madrid.” Both the management should see if it is possible. They need wide escapes, and it is not easy in a non-permanent circuit.

There are many hindrances apart from the sponsors and escapes. An F1 weekend alone is very hectic. Combining both is a huge task. The pit facilities should be able to hold both categories. The capacity of the hospitality paddock must be looked into. There are other aspects too. The debris or rubber deposit of a Formula 1 car might affect MotoGP. Both series have a huge following. The circuit must be able to hold a large gathering. Though the idea sounds thrilling, there are complications. However, Formula 1 and MotoGP will sort it out if they want to execute the plan.
