Daniel Ricciardo had been running 8th, just behind his teammate Lando Norris when his car stalled and he had to stop on the side of the track, leading to him retiring from the race just 6 laps from the end. This brought out a safety car – which remained till the end, much to the chagrin of the Tifosi.
It had been a good weekend for Ricciardo up till then, and he looked good to secure important points for McLaren, especially in the context of their battle with Alpine, but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. There was not even any advance warning of the issue, the car just stalled, and came to a halt on the grass.
The car was stuck in gear, and so a crane had to be utilized to lift it over the barriers. After being removed from the track itself, it was left hanging there from the crane, which was certainly an amusing sight. Pictures of the car hanging in the air surfaced on Reddit, and hilarity ensued.

McLaren have used Papaya Orange liveries for a while now, and it’s become synonymous with the team itself, like Red with Ferrari. This was used the base for a few puns. One user posted the image of the car hanging with the caption: “Is this how Papayas grow?”
There were many colourful responses in the comments. USER ‘PEEWUN’ wrote: “Good harvest, I’d say.” while user LandArch_0 sarcastically remarked: “That’s an Elm. Papayas don’t grow on elms.” User hje1967 remarked that the car looked like a ‘piñata’: “Look kids! A Mclaren piniata!”
In another thread, user greengreens3 said that the car hanging from the crane is a ‘new high’: “Everyone leaves Daniel hanging but now that’s a new high.” while ChocolatePleepleus said that the photo symbolizes his current situation: “Perfect symbolism for Danny’s tenure at McLaren.”
Ricciardo is indeed in a bit of a pickle. Out of a seat at McLaren in 2023, there has also been no solid news about his destination, even though Haas and Alpine were reported to be potential suitors. There also emerged rumours that Mercedes were looking to sign him in a reserve driver role, and potentially replace Lewis Hamilton, but Hamilton publicly denied that this was going to be the case.
