“It’s not as simple as lets go on forever” – F1 fans opine on shortened 3-hour race window after witnessing a disastrous Japanese Grand Prix

Suzuka International Racing Course

The 2022 Japanese Grand Prix was one of the most disastrous and poorly managed races of the season. The fans were disappointed with the way the race was managed and handled in the poor weather conditions. The race was red-flagged after three laps due to an accident by Carlos Sainz which sent an advertisement board flying onto the track.

The track was already extremely wet due to the harsh weather conditions and with the accident by Sainz, it became too dangerous for the drivers to race on. Therefore, the FIA decided to red-flag the race until conditions got better or cancel it if it did not. Eventually, they restarted the race with 40 minutes left on the clock.

The fans were disappointed with how short the race was and argued that the FIA should not have reduced the length of the race from 4 hours to 3. With the rough weather conditions, the short time period made the race tricky for the drivers and caused a lot of mistakes on the track as well. The fans were unsatisfied with how the race was managed and blamed it on the short duration of the race.

The Japanese Grand Prix was disastrous and poorly managed in the eyes of the fans and some drivers on the grid. The short duration of the race upset several fans and they brought into question the FIA’s decision to reduce races from 4 hours to 3. The conditions at the Japanese Grand Prix are an ideal case as to why the race duration shouldn’t have been shortened since unseen circumstances could end up delaying a race making the extended time an ideal option.

Fans commented on Reddit with their views saying, “May be irrelevant, but I was at Suzuka yesterday and it was getting dark during last lap. Not sure if they could’ve continued for another 5 minutes,” and, “It wouldn’t be the first racetrack in the world where they could install a whole lot of lights to brighten up the place after sunset.”

Other opinions included, “Yes but in that scenario they would start an hour earlier to give themselves a 4 hour window before sunset,” and, “Exactly this. It’s done for the TV coverage and there is no different reason for it.”

Another fan chimed in with a lengthy opinion of his: “It’s not as simple as lets go on forever like some of you guys are here suggesting, here are a few important reasons why there is a 3 hour clock and the stuff the organisation has to keep in mind. ofcourse there is a lot more than whats on my list: 1 it was getting dark. 2 broadcast license and booked satellite space…”

The fans have made it clear that they would like FIA to reevaluate their decisions in order to better manage races that have been delayed due to external so that another poorly managed like the Japanese Grand Prix, does not occur again.
