The recent introduction of the new sprint format in Formula 1 has been a topic of discussion among fans and experts alike. The new format, introduced at the Azerbaijan GP saw a reduction in practice time and an increase in racing action. It has received mixed reactions. However, one particular aspect of the new format has drawn attention and sparked some humorous reactions on Twitter – the sprint reward cap.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took pole position for the main event at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He replicated his astounding lap during Saturday’s sprint qualifying shootout and secured the first grid spot for the sprint race. However, during his final run, he crashed his Ferrari, which was an unfortunate event. Following his sprint qualifying victory, he was awarded a uniquely designed cap by Pirelli instead of a conventional trophy or wheel.
The cap, which was designed by artist Saiff Vasarhelyi, features the colors of the Azerbaijani flag and is part of Pirelli‘s new merchandising capsule collection. According to Pirelli, the sprint shootout award cap is a variant of the iconic podium cap. However, Charles Leclerc’s reaction to the cap has caused a stir on Twitter.

Leclerc was seen showing subtle disapproval as he put the cap back on the platform near his weigh-in station. Fans took notice of his reaction and turned to Twitter to share their thoughts. One fan called the cap a “damn cap” and questioned how it could be considered a prize in an F1 competition. Another fan joked about Leclerc’s reaction, stating, “The way he threw the cap” with laughing emojis.
While some fans found the cap to be a less than impressive prize, others mocked the cap’s design saying, “Looks like those hype paint-splatter bags everyone used to have in Year 7.” Fans laughed at the Ferrari driver’s reaction and the design of the cap. Some of them said “It belongs in the trash” outright refusing the cap.
As social media has demonstrated, the fans have varied responses to the sprint reward cap. Some of them ridiculed it and laughed at Charles Leclerc’s reaction to receiving it, while others praised its unique design. Despite the mixed reactions, Leclerc remains focused on the task at hand. He will start the sprint in the first place. The Monegasque driver hopes to turn his fortunes around after a less-than-ideal campaign so far. His eyes are set on a more traditional prize – a wreath, which has been a distinct and age-old trophy in the world of motorsports.
