F1 on its way to create a 100% sustainable fuel by 2026

Pat Symonds

F1 is developing a “drop-in” 100 percent sustainable gas as part of its goals to be Internet Zero Carbon by 2030. This gas may be used by the majority of street cars worldwide as well as F1 cars starting in 2026. Pat Symonds, the Chief Technical Officer of F1, is in charge of the team focused on developing this breakthrough gas and has spent months conducting extensive research to produce the best possible product for 2026.

It is predicted that by 2030, there will be about 2 billion vehicles on the road, with just 8% of them being pure battery electric vehicles (BEVS). Therefore, new strategies are sought to reduce carbon emissions.

The sport has already started with the revolution of making sustainable fuel; the fuel that powers the car as of now, the ‘E10’ fuel, is a mix of 90% fuel and 10% ethanol (which is renewable). The ethanol that is put in is completely sustainable, and according to Symonds, there are many types of ethanol available, but the one being used currently for the cars is “pure green” ethanol, and thus, is completely renewable. The best part about this entire project is that it wouldn’t just be limited to Formula 1, but the newer cars would be able to use it as well.

It would take a lot of production to go from 10% renewable fuel in 2022 to 100% in a short amount of time, thus this goal is ambitious.

“We’ve been working with ARAMCO and have now tested 39 surrogate blends of fuels,” says Symonds. “This has helped us understand the effects of the different types of blends that you can use in a sustainable fuel. We’ve been testing those in a single cylinder Formula 1 power unit so it’s representative testing – and I think that’s helped accelerate our progress,” Formula 1 quoted him.

The sport has been at the forefront of innovation for more than 70 years, creating the most effective hybrid systems and power units ever. The goal of the sport now is to propel a global green revolution.
