The Alpine F1 team’s hopes of scoring some valuable points at the Hungaroring have disappeared into ash after Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly collide with each other going into Turn 1. Ocon started the race from P12 on the grid and had the inside line, whereas his teammate was on the outside in P15.
However, their collision did not take because of their fault, Ocon got tagged from behind, and that led to him losing control of his car; moreover, at the same time, Pierre Gasly arrived on the scene from the outside and had nowhere to go when his teammate’s car came toward him. After the incident, Gasly came straight into the pits and was followed by Ocon.
The damage on both cars was significant, and Alpine decided to retire both from the race. Since the incident, fans have been unable to hold themselves back and have completely ripped into the Enstone-based Alpine Formula 1 team. The outfit has been on a torrid run in the recent races of the ongoing campaign.
Fans’ reactions to Alpine’s double DNF in Hungary
Looking at the reactions of the fans, it is pretty clear that they are having a great laugh at the expense of the Otmar Szafnauer-led Alpine F1 team. The outfit has been on a downward spiral, and they are just not getting a break from the bad luck accompanying them since the last few races.
Alpine is behind McLaren in the 2023 Constructors Championship
The Alpine F1 team had a strong hold on the fifth position in the Constructors Championship until recently, but since the British Grand Prix, the Woking-based McLaren F1 team has overtaken them and grabbed hold of fifth. It was thanks to the efforts of Norris and Piastri at the Silverstone F1 circuit.
As things stand, Alpine is in the sixth position with 47 points to their name, whereas McLaren is currently on 59 points. Moreover, with Ocon and Gasly’s double DNF at the Hungaroroing, the gap will surely extend. This is not how Szafnauer and Co. would have imagined their Hungary outing to pan out.
While the Hungarian GP has brought zero points for Alpine, the outfit would get another chance to score some solid points at the last race before the upcoming summer break. The race at the famous Spa circuit is next weekend, and the French team would desperately look to end their first half of the 2023 season on a high.
