Ferrari postpone key upgrade planned for Imola GP due to stormy conditions in Emilia-Romagna: Reports
Ferrari were planning to introduce a key upgrade in Imola, but expecting treacherous conditions for the race weekend, they have reportedly delayed it.

By all meanings of the word, Ferrari have been ‘disappointing’ in 2023. Many had expected a return to form, and for them to battle with Red Bull as they did at the start of 2022. Some even expected a three-way title fight, with Mercedes involved. However, neither of these ‘hopes’ came true, and it’s Aston Martin who currently have the second-best car. And even they are not particularly close to Red Bull, who are clearly top dogs. On the other hand, the Maranello team sits fourth.
There is some potential for this situation to change – through upgrades, of course. Ferrari’s goal for 2023 was to win the title, but that now looks highly unlikely. Red Bull are likely to run away with it, even with the cost cap penalty potentially biting them later on. But there’s still the fight for second place to consider, and the upgrades can certainly help them on this front. While major upgrades were planned for the upcoming race in Imola, according to Motorsport.com, they have been delayed.
Ferrari had planned to introduce the new rear suspension at the Emilia-Romagna GP, but the current weather conditions in the region mean they have postponed it. The (Italian) Department of Civil Protection has issued red alerts in large parts of Emilia-Romagna, and there is a risk of flooding and landslides. Tuesday will be especially stormy, with around 100mm of rain expected.
The weather will ease up somewhat by the time of the race but even light poses complications. So, as a precaution, Ferrari have chosen to delay their upgrades. Of course, they will still be bringing track-specific modifications which suit Imola. In addition, to this, there will also be a modification to the diffuser – which has apparently given ‘excellent’ feedback in the simulator.

Ferrari’s new rear suspension likely to be brought to Barcelona
The floor with new Venturi channels, which was introduced in Miami, will also feature in Imola. The more evolved version, though, will arrive in Barcelona, with the ‘sides tapered in the lower part of the sides’. The Spanish Grand Prix looks like it could be a make-or-break race for Ferrari. Such huge upgrades must bring good returns, if not, then it’s going to be difficult for them. Even against Aston Martin and Mercedes.
The rear suspension, which as stated was scheduled to arrive in Imola, will also most likely arrive in Barcelona. According to the report, it will also be accompanied by a very big upgrade – a new aerodynamic package. The next three races are very important for Ferrari, not only because they come at a crucial stage of the season, but because they are all technically home races [Ferrari – Imola, Charles Leclerc – Monaco, Carlos Sainz – Barcelona]. They will look to maximize the results.
