Ferrari will introduce the new ERS “as late as possible,” ahead of F1’s 2026 regulations change deadline

Ferrari has been successful so far as the team have trumped into the new Hybrid era with their New-regulations car. The team lead the Constuctors championship while Charles Leclerc leads the Drivers championship with 2 wins in the opening 4 races of the 2022 F1 season. But the team have set sights on the 2026 regulations changes that focus on the Powerunits and hybrid engines.

“This is an update that we will carry with us as a base in 2022” claimed Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto when asked about the team’s late reveal of their new ERS revealed ahead of the 2021 Russian GP. The Team are expected to roll in a new ERS but plans on releasing them late until developments are frozen ahead of the 2026 Engine regulations.

F1 Journalist Giuliano Duchessa wrote in his column that Ferrari will delay the release of its MGU-K similar to last year. The Scuderia will hold the release until the deadline, to prevent competitors from gaining an advantage.

With the implementation of new Power unit regulations in 2026, Engine development was frozen at the start of the 2022 season. This does not include the hybrid components that can be developed until the 1st of September. According to F1 Journalist, Giuliano Duchessa, Ferrari plan to hold the release of their ERS system until the deadline day.

Duchessa wrote, “The new ERS will notably have a new specification MGU-K and will be carried out later in the season “as late as possible”. Partly because all the winter work was focused on the endothermic by delaying the initial work, partly to develop as long as possible. As is known, the deadline for the approval of these components is September 1st.”

It’s likely what many manufacturers are doing as well. F1 Constructors are putting all of their resources into developing new and better machinery in order to prevent competitors from getting an advantage. With the Hybrid era becoming increasingly competitive, the 2026 regulations could be a watershed moment for all of the sport’s teams.
