“For us, it was like a victory,” Sebastian Vettel compliments the team for great strategy at the Imola GP
Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel and Aston Martin had a great weekend at the Imola GP as they bagged their first points of the season, thanks to a P8 finish of Vettel and a P10 finish of Lance Stroll. Together they won 5 points and took the team to P9 in the constructors’ championship, just above the Williams, who have a single point to their name.
The result of this race seemed highly unlikely for the team as they appeared to be facing several issues in Australia, and no major upgrades were planned for this weekend due to the lack of practice sessions before the qualifying on Friday. However, on a rain infected weekend, Vettel and Stroll did manage to perform better than half of the grid, giving a boost to the team and its fans. To Seb, the P8 finish was much more than just a position.
Sebastian Vettel, as quoted by GP Fans, said, “It was like a victory. We are not the fastest at the minute, we are pretty much at the other side of the field, but we did really well.”
Sebastian Vettel’s on what helped the Aston Martin
Friday’s schedule of racing was heavily affected by the rain. The qualifying itself was called off 5 times due to the cars slipping off the track due to water on the track. Which Seb believes also helped them.
He said, “The weekend helped us with the conditions, but we managed to capitalize. We did a great job on calling for the dries, and everybody else, then I think copied what we did. I was happy even to go a lap before or two.”
Speaking of the minor battle with Charles Leclerc, who had to make an extra pit, Vettel said, “I think no chance to hold Charles off in the end. He was like four seconds faster or three seconds faster. We did well. If you tell us we are fighting a Ferrari with four laps to go before the race, I would have taken it.”
Given the recent boost that Aston Martin has received in Italy, we can certainly expect more improvements to follow in the coming weekends. And as said by their team principal, Mike Krack, with Sebastian Vettel’s feedback they can know plenty of things to work upon.
