Kevin Magnussen made a surprise comeback to Formula 1 in 2022, just days before the first race of the season. The Dane surpassed expectations on his return and outperformed Mick Schumacher throughout the year. Schumacher was subsequently replaced by Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. Now, former F1 driver Marc Surer reckoned that Magnussen was getting a taste of his own medicine.
Hulkenberg has delivered some impressive results on his return to F1 this year. The German driver has been the faster Haas on most tracks in the first half of the season. Surer claimed that Nico Hulkenberg is doing what Magnussen did to Schumacher last season. He told Motorsportsweek, “Magnussen has destroyed Mick Schumacher’s career in Formula 1, and now Hulkenberg is destroying Magnussen‘s.”
The Swiss driver was surprised to see it come full circle as Kevin Magnussen faced the heat. After the Dane had ensured that Mick Schumacher would not get a chance to race for Haas due to the massive gap between the two drivers. But now, it was Hulkenberg who was the faster Haas. Marc Surer said, “He’s experiencing the same thing that happened to Mick. It’s truly incredible.”

Marc Surer is disappointed with Kevin Magnussen’s performances
Nico Hulkenberg has out-qualified Magnussen on nine instances this season, with the German driver consistently making it to the Top 10. At the same time, the Dane has only started from the Top 10 twice this season. Surer was convinced that the two Haas drivers would match each other this season. However, the 71-year-old insisted that Kevin Magnussen’s failure to reach the 35-year-old showed the talent of the former Force India driver.
The former F1 driver said, “Magnussen, I expected him to perform at Hülkenberg’s level. He does that in the race, but not in qualifying. It’s evident that Hülkenberg is simply a natural talent.” The Swiss driver believed that Kevin Magnussen might further fall behind his teammate if he lost motivation with the stagnant pace of the Haas car.
Marc Surer was convinced that Kevin Magnussen was facing the same pressure that he gave to Mick Schumacher in 2022. The Danish driver has failed to match new teammate Nico Hulkenberg this year with a big gap in one-lap pace. Although, it remains to be seen if Magnussen can fight against the German driver in the remaining ten races.
