Formula 1 has witnessed a rapid growth in popularity in recent years. The United States of America has been the key market for the sport courtesy of the Netflix docuseries, Drive to Survive. F1 presently has three American races on its calendar including the Las Vegas GP. Now, the sport has reportedly registered a trademark for a fourth race.
Recent trademark applications show that Formula 1 Licensing VB has registered trademarks related to a potential Chicago GP. This includes, “Formula 1 Grand Prix of Chicago,” “Grand Prix of Chicago,” “Chicago Grand Prix,” and “Formula 1 Chicago Grand Prix.” These were registered on January 19, 2024.
It must be noted that there has been no official news or confirmation about any F1 race in the city of Chicago. However, the city could be interested in a new street race considering the sport’s ever-increasing popularity in the United States.
Formula 1 has received interest from several venues for new races. The recently signed deal with Madrid to host the Spanish GP is the latest race added to the calendar.
Does F1 really need another race in the US?
Formula 1 returned to the US in 2012 after having no races for a gap of five years. The Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas was the track that brought back the US GP. Over the years, the sport has attracted millions of new fans, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Subsequently, F1 signed a deal with Miami for a second race in the ‘Land of the Free.’
Moreover, F1’s commercial rights owner Liberty Media became the promotor of the Las Vegas GP. Subsequently, the group invested heavily in the Vegas race which made its debut last season. The Sin City race goes through the iconic Vegas strip and saw big celebrities attend the Grand Prix weekend.
Certainly, many believe that F1 does not need another race in the United States. This comes at a time when the sport has no races in the entirety of Africa, something that Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about. Moreover, the Chicago GP would likely be on a street circuit if it does become a reality which could displease traditionalists on the grid including Max Verstappen.
As such, it remains to be seen if Formula 1’s recent trademarks actually result in a new race in the city of Chicago. Fans would need to wait to see if F1 breaks silence on this rumored race.
