During the final lap of the Australian GP, George Russell went through a major crash but walked out unharmed. While trying to overtake Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard suddenly used his brake and Russell got caught in the dirty air behind.
George Russell slid into the wall, bounced back, and found himself in the middle of the track. The car fell sideways and Russell repeatedly called for a red flag, yet there was no quick action and only a virtual safety car was sent while others finished their race.

People could hear his pleading on the radio when he continued to call for a red flag.
It was not a pleasant place to be, in the middle of a high-speed corner, on the racing line and with the VSC taking 10 or 15 seconds to come out. It doesn't sound like a lot but you can have three cars coming around the corner in the space of 10 seconds. When you are doing 250 [kph] in a corner and there is a car in the middle of the road... I was really quite worried.George Russell post Australian GP via racingnews365
What later was questioned was why the authorities delayed taking the right call. The 26-year-old was lying in the middle of the road for quite some time with cars going around him. Many fans were seen upset over the incident as the driver’s life was at risk.
F1 Pundit believes George Russell’s crash was a red-flag incident
As mentioned earlier, Russell went through a crash during the final lap of the Aus GP, but what came as a surprise was that there was no safety car and the incident was not marked as a red flag. While on the team radio, the Brit was seen labeling the horrific incident as a red flag.

F1 analyst, Martin Brundle gave his view on the incident after the race.
the zone was covered by double-waved yellow flags which means slow down and be prepared to stop. But being just around a blind corner and now with personnel and the Medical Car on site, that situation had 'red flag' written all over it.Martin Brundle said Via Sky Sports
It was sheer luck that the other drivers managed to get by without causing any further collision, but what seems more interesting is that despite the driver’s plea for a red flag, there was no action taken. Going forward, the FIA needs to take a look at the recent crash carefully and make sure they learn their lessons. It is the FIA’s job to make sure the sport is as safe as possible for the fast racing drivers.
