The future of the Belgian Grand Prix is uncertain, and the event may be axed for 2023.

Formula One is finally returning after a month-long break with the Belgian GP and Journalist Erik Van Haren has indicated that Spa could feature on next year’s calendar as well.

Formula One is heading in the direction of expanding the sport to the farthest corners of the World, and in order to go forward with it, the common belief is that the old circuits are the ones who are going to face the ax. The historical Belgian Grand Prix is also in this category.

However, despite all the negative rumors regarding the position of Spa on next year’s calendar, Haren is quite optimistic that the circuit would be able to preserve its place at least for the 2023 season.

Year on year, new circuits are getting added to F1 calendars and this has put an insane level of pressure on the older circuits who are not able to compete in terms of finances with the newer ones. As things stand, it is believed that France and Belgium are headed for the exit door at the end of 2022.

The hierarchy at F1 is trying to add the South African Circuit for next season but the negotiants are not going at a brisk pace and as per a source, there are high chances that African GP could be shifted to 2024.

Haren has indicated that this is good news for Spa as it will leave space on next year’s calendar for them. Moreover, while stressing about it the F1 Journalist said, “At the moment there is a good chance that South Africa will only be on the calendar in 2024, so not yet next year.”

“And that means there is a good chance that Spa will still be on the calendar next year. At least for one more year.”

Erik Van Haren has put his money on Spa being on the calendar for 2023, however, F1 operates in a dynamic environment where things can change at any moment.

It might be looking positive for the Belgian GP at the moment, but nothing can be said for certain until the official 2023 F1 calendar comes out.
