“He came back stronger,” Daniel Ricciardo labels Pierre Gasly as the ‘most underrated’ driver

“He came back stronger,” Daniel Ricciardo labels Pierre Gasly as the ‘most underrated’ driver

With Pierre Gasly's contract extension, perhaps Daniel Ricciardo will be breathing a sigh of relief.

Daniel Ricciardo has referred to Pierre Gasly as the most underrated driver in Formula 1. He was given the boot 12 races after being promoted to the Red Bull seat, in one of the most visible firings in Formula 1 history. He had only completed one F1 season when he got the call from Christian Horner informing him that he had been selected to replace Daniel Ricciardo, who was leaving for Renault.

Since being demoted, Gasly has restored his reputation and position within the industry by winning his first race, placing on the podium, and earning his maiden career podium. So much so that one of his fellow drivers has noticed it.

Gasly had no choice but to leave Red Bull after only 12 races when he was abruptly sacked.

He began competing in the sport in 2017 as a reserve driver for Toro Rosso and advanced to a full-time position in 2018. He made an impression with a P4 result in Bahrain after retiring from the season-opening race in Australia. He would go on to finish the season in 15th place, which earned him a spot at Red Bull after Ricciardo left.

The Italian Grand Prix of 2020 at Monza was surprisingly won by Gasly, and the Australian mentioned the same when he was asked about him.

“I’m happy for him as a human because I do like him, but as a competitor I respect that. Getting to the top is difficult, staying there is even harder,” PlanetF1 quoted Ricciardo.

“He went through a pretty big rollercoaster in 12 months, and I just know that he really fought back well from getting written off.”

Although this season has been difficult for Gasly, he is regarded as one of the top drivers on the grid after rebuilding his reputation in the sport in the years that have come after. His name is frequently bandied about for transfers to more powerful teams like McLaren or perhaps an improbable comeback to Red Bull, but the Frenchman has lost practically all of his confidence after being demoted from Red Bull in 2019.
