“He will own Norris,” F1 Twitter blows up as Oscar Piastri finally signs for McLaren

Oscar Piastri

It has finally come to an end. The CRB’s decision on Oscar Piastri’s future was expected on Thursday, but it did not come. A day later, it arrived. The CRB ruled that the only valid contract in this situation is the one Piastri has with McLaren.

The FIA announced as much on their website. Just a few minutes later, the saga came to an end. A month after that tweet from Piastri, McLaren have finally announced the Australian for 2023 in Daniel Ricciardo’s former seat. This would shock Alpine, especially Otmar Szafnauer who seemed reasonably confident that things would go their way in the hearing.

In McLaren’s press release announcing his joining the team: “I’m extremely excited to be making my F1 debut with such a prestigious team as McLaren and I’m very grateful for the opportunity that’s been offered to me.” also added: “I’m focused on preparing for my F1 debut in 2023 and starting my F1 career in papaya.”

As can be expected, after such a long and winding affair, fans of the sport are completely thrilled. Oscar Piastri is one of the hottest prospects in the sport right now, and his entry into Formula 1 can spell nothing but good things. While the early rumours had suggested that he may be loaned to Williams, it’s McLaren where he’ll be making his debut.

McLaren’s team principal, Andreas Seidl said in the announcement blog: “The entire team is delighted to welcome Oscar to McLaren for the 2023 F1 season. He has an impressive racing career to date, and we are sure that together with Lando, he will be able to help us move another step forward towards our ambitions.”

In 2020, Oscar Piastri conquered F3, and then the next year, he conquered F2. It has been a meteoric rise for young Piastri, and it was a shame that he had to sit out a year of competing, but all is well that ends well. The announcement also gave rise to some amusing reactions within the community.

Of course, McLaren are still behind in the Constructors Championship.

The FIA in its announcement of the decision, also said that the contract between McLaren and Oscar Piastri dates back to the 4th of July, just a day after the British Grand Prix, and also more than a full week before Daniel Ricciardo’s social media post announcing his commitment to McLaren. Even if Ricciardo had wanted to stay, McLaren had made their mind up.
