“History is no longer enough,” Stefano Domenicali cannot guarantee a place for historic circuit on F1 calendar

Stefano Domenicali

The Monza circuit in Italy has to be one of the most iconic tracks in F1 history. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali who is italian himself knows the amount of history that is tied with this circuit. It is the 5th oldest national circuit. During 2013 the track set in a record by becoming the most held grand prix. This Italian track is one of the two circuits that have held an event of the Formula One World Championship Grand Prix every season since the sport came into existence in 1950.

This year, Formula One will come to the Monza circuit to hold a race for the 72nd time. Stefano Domenicali who has also previously worked with Italian giant Scuderia Ferrari should know how important the track is to the fans of the sport and to his old team. Many term this high speed track as the home ground for Ferrari. Charles Leclerc won the race for Ferrari back in 2019 and what a spectacle it was. The passion which the Tifosi have for the sport is immense.

In recent times, tracks like Spa, Monza and Monaco have come under massive threat of being kicked off the calendar. With F1 giving preference to street circits which pay them a substantial sum to race there. With Spa signing a single year deal and Monza a week away, anything could happen. Stefano Domenicali shared a few thoughts on this ongoing situation.

He further went on to talking about the demand that the sport has. “F1 is now a party everywhere we go – there is a queue to host a grand prix,” he said.

“History is no longer enough for this and an organisation like Monza will have to raise the bar to stay in the world championship. The competitive push to have races means that everyone has to raise the bar,” he continued.

With the history the Monza has and the racing action that it provides, it looks like a negotiation tactic by Stefano Domenicali. The amount of outrage that would be caused by the circuit’s removal would be immense. While F1 intends to have an Italian GP, it just can’t guarantee if it will take place at the Monza circuit. Only time will tell what will happen.
