“Hopefully, I can get to drive a F1 there” : F2 leader Felipe Drugovich hopes to earn promotion
Felipe Drugovich
Felipe Drugovich is experiencing an outstanding season in Formula 2. The Dutch MP Motorsport driver has already won four races, including the main race in Monaco last weekend, and is the uncontested championship leader. For a Formula 1 transition, everything seems to be set for Drugovich.
However, unlike many Formula 2 rivals, the Brazilian presently does not have a Formula 1 deal. On being asked about people being surprised at him not having an F1 contract yet, Drugovich responded: “Yes, I am too (laughs). Of course, I had a few opportunities here and there. In a way, if you sign something, it does not give you any certainties, like doing an F1 test. Or if I sign for racing in F1. There wasn’t really a point to sign with a junior academy or something like that.
“Of course, now, maybe, it can be the option. Because they (talented drivers) are just going up if they are from academies; drivers or reserve drivers. In the past, there wasn’t a concrete opportunity that I really liked. So, we preferred to stay out of it, at least we were free and not stuck by any academy until now,” concluded the 22-year-old driver.
Felipe Drugovich gives his take on F1 possibilities
The Brazilian driver on being made aware of how Formula 2 2021 World Champion Oscar Piastri is failing to seal a deal with any of the Formula One teams as a main works driver, talked about how it’s a bit extreme for Piastri who’s also serving as a reserve driver for Alpine. Drugovich insisted on how Piastri deserves a seat in Formula One.
“No, no, they are not. But I think it is also quite early. They need to wait a little bit to see. But there are talks. And hopefully, we going to get some deal there,” answered the Brazilian on being asked if any of the 10 Formula One teams on the grid have approached him this season with a contract for him.
Drugovich concluded by bringing into attention how it has now became mandatory for the 10 Formula One teams to have a test driver drive for two FP1s. So, the Brazilian is open to the opportunity of being a test driver for any of the 10 teams and hopefully get to drive an F1 car during the Friday morning sessions.
