Christian Horner denies George Russell’s outlandish sandbagging claims

Following the conclusion of the Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes’s young British driver George Russell voiced his opinion on Red Bull’s scintillating performances. He believes that the team from Milton Keynes is sandbagging, deliberately underperforming to hide the true extent of their speed from the rest of the grid. This could be an attempt to prevent rival teams from finding a way to rein it in by means of F1 regulation changes

Russell stated, “For sure, they’re holding back. They’re almost embarrassed to show their full potential because the faster they seem globally the more the sport is going to try to hold them back somehow.” He proceeded to praise the team for their work and set it as a benchmark for Mercedes to up their game

Now Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has come forth to express his opinion on the young driver’s claims. He laughed them off and quickly substantiated Red Bull’s advantage by attributing it to tyre management and an optimal pit strategy. He said, “That’s very generous of him. His team would know all too well about those kinds of advantages,“.

He added, “There’s always an element of managing that goes on in any race. You could see because it was a one-stop race and a very early one-stop race, there was an element of tyre management that was going on, which is what they were doing. We’ve obviously weighted the car towards the race rather than qualifying.”

Red Bull Racing has clearly outdone itself with regard to the development of its car this season, as it is clearly in a league of its own in every aspect. They dominate qualifying sessions and the race with their Championship-leading driver pairing of Verstappen and Perez. They lead the Championship with an astounding 123 points, 58 points clear of P2. Despite being penalized for breaching the 2021 cost cap and being granted a reduced time in the wind tunnel, the RB19 displays an exemplary pace. It is crushing its rivals with the prowess we last witnessed by Mercedes.

The Silver Arrows are famous for asserting their dominance between 2014 and 2021. They won 8 consecutive Constructors’ championships, an insurmountable feat. The Mercedes in the turbo-hybrid era is considered one of the most dominant cars of all time, proving itself time again along with consistently raising the high standard they set for themselves. Their dominance was broken by none other than Red Bull, who seem to have inherited their winning mentality and strive to achieve greater heights.

Sir Lewis Hamilton, who won the team their championships, has claimed that the RB19  is “The fastest car I’ve seen compared to the rest. I’ve definitely never seen a car so fast. When we were fast, we weren’t that fast.  I don’t know why or how, but he came past me with serious speed.”

Hamilton clearly believes that the current Red Bull is superior to any car his own team has ever engineered. However, it remains to be seen whether the veteran is playing mind games and trying to get Red Bull to grow laxer. Nonetheless, despite the evident superiority of the RB19 this year, it stands to be seen whether they can consistently continue to do this as Mercedes did for 8 years, a most admirable feat.
